I admire the later work of Robert Frank, work well after The Americans, collage and assemblage. I also find inspiration in
the tintypes of John Coffer and Tina Maas. For the purpose of this class and my project in the certificate program however
my inspiration are the images found in Joyce Tenneson's "Light Warriors" and "Wise Women". Her images are luminous.
Although primarily photographed against the same mottled background, processed and toned in the same manner, to me, they are each unique with the series not staid or boring
"They are almost incredulous because the old stereotype is that we shouldn't get more beautiful with age" (Wise Women). Tenneson beautifully debunks the stereotype. Similarly, my goal with my audio/photographic portraits of Muslim women is to also debunk the stereotype of wearing Hijab and misconceptions toward Islam with regard to women. Primarily the belief that women who veil are oppressed.
